A Little Knowledge Goes a Long Way
With the huge cup game against Huddersfield looming large on the horizon, Welling boss Adrian Pennock wanted his players to concentrate solely on the league match away to Maidenhead. With so little time to prepare for the cup-tie, Pennock sent two trusted scouts, Mr P. Parker and ‘The Encyclopaedia of Non-League Football’ himself, Mr N.Gurney to the Galpharm Stadium to run the rule over the Terriers in their home match with Swindon Town. Here's what they came up with...
Thanks for going boys - what were your impressions.
Lovely stadium Ade - burgers were a bit tough but mushy peas were lovely...
I think he means the team, Nigel.
Oh right boss. Well the keeper Rabc... Rac... Rabo... ...Rachubka
Bless you Nigel.
Didn’t have an awful lot to do really. The defence looked a bit wobbly at times and gave away their second penalty in successive weeks.
Yes, Nige, the defending was poor at times... wouldn’t have happened if I had been in charge.
What about formations, tactics, defensive set-up etc.
Well it was a flat back four, Adrian, with Holdsworth on the right.
Yeah, I thought that was strange - he was a good forward when he was at Wimbledon. Must be getting on a bit now and I was surprised to see him at....
I think it might be a different Holdsworth. I am hoping that Keds can give them a few problems at the back.
Yes the lad Kedwell looks a good signing.
Kedwell? Mmmm... ... don’t recognise the name boss. Where did he come from, Chelmsford or Dover?
They played four across the middle of the park, Ade, with Schofield pushing on to join the front men.
Yeah he looks a good player boss. Got to take your hat off to the lad really for combining professional football with presenting 'This Morning' five times a week....
Geez...
And the front two didn't get a lot of service but they are going to be the biggest dangers: Abbott and Booth.
Yeah and I thought Abbo had retired or was playing local football. Always thought Boothy would go on to better things after playing for Welling.
Yes, thank you, Nige. Defending set pieces is going to be crucial, Adrian. Would you like me to take some of the training sessions with the lads this week with regard to that?
Thanks, but no thanks, Paul.
Training... set pieces... what are you talking about boss?
Thanks for your input boys. I am sure it is going to be very tough but we have some height and power in the side with the likes of Mooro, Keds, Shearer and Owen.
Owen’s not that big is he? Got to admit that I’m surprised that Freddy Shepherd lent you his two lads and isn’t worried about them being cup tied....
Adrian's mobile phone rings.
Oh hello there Phil... from what I’ve just heard, I think you'd better order the video of the Huddersfield game last weekend... see you at training.
